Review:

Classics Today: David Hurwitz
By general acclamation this 1963 production ranks as the finest of Karajan's four complete cycles, and while some listeners might prefer individual performances from later (or earlier) sets, here the consensus really is correct. The reason is easy to understand: by 1963 Karajan had managed to put his personal stamp on the orchestra in terms of polish and virtuosity, playing the music like a sort of high-gloss Toscanini, but he had not yet succumbed to that fetish for smoothness at all costs that so often mars his later work--and that incidentally banished the orchestra's wind, brass, and percussion sections to several decades of sonic purgatory, at least on recordings.

And so in the Seventh the horns ring out as they should; the winds make their emphatic contribution to the Second Symphony's rich textures; the Pastoral hasn't lost every vestige of charm as it was later to do; and the chorus in the finale of the Ninth has more impact than latterly. This classic set was very well remastered as part of DG's complete Beethoven Edition, perhaps not so much in terms of brighter timbres or increased clarity, but as a function of added warmth and naturalness--a touch more depth to the sound image and a greater sense of fullness. In short, whatever the medium, these performances have withstood the test of time, and even if Karajan's is not your favorite Beethoven (and it's not mine), there's no denying this set's excellence.

CLASSIC FM BEST INSTRUMENTAL CD OF 2006

MAIL ON SUNDAY BEST INSTRUMENTAL CD OF 2006

'I cannot imagine many piano lovers failing to fall for this delectable and all-too-brief collection of impressions, portraits and postcards. If you are not drawn to the imaginative programme of the familiar, the brand new and the entirely unknown, then the elegant, eloquent playing of this master pianist will surely seduce you ... We are treated to some of the loveliest pianissimos and and delicate shadings you'll hear, familiar from Hough's earlier Piano Albums and similar in his complete empathy with this kind of repertoire...Hough's own On Falla has an authentic ring that should provide him with a blistering encore for years to come...The piano sound (Andrew Keener and Simon Eadon) is as you would expect from Hyperion's dream team'
(Gramophone)

'Stephen Hough is among the most intellectual of contemporary pianists; but he's also among the most playful and tonally poetic keyboard artists... The unashamedly romantic reading of the Soler Sonata that opens the programme sets up the perspective: extremely flexible tempos, all-embracing colours, an exceptional range of articulation, and a subtle observation of polyphony that leads to characterized conversations among the music's competing voices... Hough's own On Falla brings the collection to a whimsically brilliant close... An ear-caressing release.'
(International Record Review)

'Hough again has a more intimate stance than many pianists, quietly brilliant in the cross-cutting between musical ideas. Everything is wonderfully fresh and nothing is laboured - it's a superb and surprising recital'
(BBC Music Magazine)

'A ravishing display of light-fingered, insouciant virtuosity'
(Classic FM Magazine)

'The sparkle and sensitivity of Stephen Hough's playing is lavished on a typically imaginative cross-section of music inspired by Spain...The perfect Christmas present'
(The Times)

'Hough is one of Britian's best-kept cultural secrets; a pianist of such sophistication he will, I suspect, by the end of his career be able to be mentioned in the same breath as the few great British pianists of the past, such as Clifford Curzon and Solomon. Hough is a connoisseur, not merely a virtuoso. The 17 pieces on this beautifully recorded CD have all been carefully chosen to reflect the achievements of the Spanish nationalist school of Albeniz and Granados, the finest French exponents of the Spanish style, Ravel and Debussy, and a splendidly evocative encore, On Falla, by Hough himself. Irresistible'
(Mail on Sunday)

'Like a good book that makes you laugh out loud and want to read it again, a CD of piano solos that brings a smile of appreciation to your lips is a great find. Pianist Stephen Hough brings his sublime musicality to this marvellous collection of Spanish piano works'
(Glasgow Herald)

'Stephen Hough's delicious Spanish Album, a real connoisseur's choice'
(Mail on Sunday)

'Everything on this rewarding disc suggests that Hough intuitively feels the idiom in his bones'
(Pianist Magazine)

'This is truly one of the loveliest piano compilations around and deserves every recommendation'
(Classical.net)

Review :
Amazon.co.uk
Editorial Review : Harriet Smith
The First Concerto can live or die by its own parody. Overplay it, and it's about as funny as bad slapstick, treat it straight and it's mesmerising in its black humour, always within a hair's-breadth of crossing the line into sheer insanity. Dmitri Alexeev is a gruff but never harsh soloist, the trumpet-playing of Philip Jones apparently effortless, the ECO sounding anything but English (a tribute to their conductor). The Second Concerto is, on the surface at least, a far more amiable animal, though with Shostakovich things are never quite as simple as they seem. The second movement contains one of his best melodies, a veritable love-song, which Alexeev plays simply and affectingly. As a bonus, you get the Assault On Beautiful Gorky. Written for a patriotic film, it's a stylistic flashback to the romanticism of Tchaikovsky and Miaskovsky. And, as if any further incentive were needed, the disc comes at budget price.

Marc-Andre Hamelin Plays Chopin (Hyperion)

Marc-Andre Hamelin Plays Chopin (Hyperion)
Release Date: 01/13/2009
Label: Hyperion Catalog #: 67706 Spars Code: DDD
Composer: Frédéric Chopin
Performer: Marc-André Hamelin

Number of Discs: 1
Recorded in: Stereo
Length: 1 Hours 17 Mins.

'Though Hamelin has made many fabulous discs, particularly in repertoire of superhuman virtuosity, this is one of his very finest achievements to date'
(Gramophone)

'Chopin’s second and third piano sonatas lie at the heart of the Romantic piano literature, and Hamelin, a poet among virtuosos, brings sensibility and a brilliant technique in equal measure to this oft-recorded music … This is the Chopin of a true Romantic, spellbinding at its (considerable) best and superbly recorded'
(Sunday Times)

'[Third Sonata] 'Hamelin's impeccable pianism allows him to make light work of the most demanding passages. The first movement is as imposing as you would expect of a player renowned for his staggering virtuosity, but a solid framework also underpins moments of wonderful delicacy. Hamelin builds the Second Sonata just as unerringly, producing a poetic and passionate performance that is finally carried off on a spectral wind … Hyperion's new release adds up to a hugely satisfying Chopin recital'
(BBC Music Magazine)

'This is Chopin playing of a superior kind in which a musician of penetrating intellect is able to observe every detail of these miraculous scores … This is a fine example of supreme technical skill at the service of musical poetry'
(Classic FM Magazine)

'Hamelin's fabulous, transcendental technique takes all the challenges of the treacherous keyboard writing in its stride … Hamelin's pianissimos have a wonderful purity and definition'
(The Guardian)

'In the Op 27 Nocturnes his hesitations are masterly, while the Berceuse, the seductive opening track, shimmers with pensive beauty … An excellent excursion into standard repertoire for this adventurous pianist'

Ginette Neveu : The First Recordings & Josef Hassid : The Complete Recordings - 1992.

Ginette Neveu : The First Recordings & Josef Hassid : The Complete Recordings - 1992.

Ginette Neveu (1919-49) and Josef Hassid (1923-50) both died tragically young: Neveu in an air crash (with her pianist brother Jean) and Hassid in hospital, of meningitis following brain surgery. Neveu, of course, had a distinguished career, brief though it was, and left a legacy of recordings which HMV reissued in a four-LP box-set reviewed by me 12 years ago (9/80—nla). Hassid, on the other hand, made only four 78s (three 12-inch, one ten-inch), all devoted to lollipops'—short pieces, most of them lasting less than four minutes. They were made in June and November 1940, the year of his London debut, with a recital in the Wigmore Hall and a concert in Queen's Hall (where he had a memory lapse in the Tchaikovsky Concerto), and only months before his mental illness forced him to give up playing for ever.

Ginette Neveu (August 11, 1919 - October 27, 1949) was a French violinist.

Born in Paris into a very musical family, Ginette Neveu became a violinist and her brother Jean-Paul Neveu a classical pianist. She was also the grandniece of composer Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937). A child prodigy, Ginette Neveu took lessons from her mother and made her solo debut at the age of seven with the Colonne Orchestra in Paris. Her parents then decided to send her to study under Line Talluel, and after further studies with Jules Boucherit at the Paris Conservatory, she completed her training with instruction from George Enescu, Nadia Boulanger, and Carl Flesch.
At age 15, Ginette Neveu achieved worldwide celebrity status when she won the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition over 180 contestants, including the future virtuoso David Oistrakh, who finished second. Neveu was immediately signed to an extensive touring contract that, over the next two years, saw her give solo performances at the leading concert halls of Germany, Poland, the Soviet Union, the United States, and Canada.
Neveu's international career was interrupted by World War II, but she finally was able to make her London debut in 1945. Her brother Jean-Paul accompanied her on piano, and the two toured post-war Europe extensively (appearing at the Prague Spring International Music Festival), as well as visiting Australia and South America. They also made return engagements at major venues in the United States. Noted for her intensity, power, and impeccable sonority, Ginette Neveu is recognized as one of the world's great violinists, despite a career that ended at a very young age.
Ginette Neveu gave her last concert on October 20, 1949. A week later, on October 27, she and her brother boarded an Air France flight en route to another series of concert engagements. All 48 passengers on board the flight, including the famous French boxing champion Marcel Cerdan, died when the plane flew into a mountain after two failed attempts to make a landing at the Sao Miguel Island airport in the Azores.
It is said that Ginette Neveu's body was found still clutching her Stradivarius in her arms.

Josef Hassid : Violinist
(I found this short biography in this wordpress page .
My heartfelt thanks to the owner of this page, atheineon, for this info )

Often prodigious artists become literally myths after their death, especially when they meet it at a very young age and under tragic circumstances. This is most definitely the case of the splendid Polish violinist Józef Hassid, according to the celebrated British pianist Gerald Moore’s words:
“with the possible exception of Menuhin, is the most incandescent talent I have ever heard”.
Born Józef Chasyd in Poland to a Jewish family in 1923, lost his mother when he was still a little boy and almost concomitantly started showing a quite timid and reclusive temperament, an introverted nature that worsening accompanied him until his tragic late days. Nevertheless, since his boyhood he revealed a great musical talent becoming one of the most famous pupils of the celebrated Hungarian maestro Karl Flesch. He received an honorary diploma in the 1935 at Warsaw’s Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition (won by Ginette Noveau) where also the great David Oistrakh, Henri Temianka and the young Ida Haendel participated. Apparently poor Josef, whose touch was undeniably excellent, suffered a temporary amnesia during his performance, most probably due to his highly emotional disposition. His depressive and melancholic temper was greatly accentuated by a disillusioned and highly contrasted adolescent romance that blossomed during his sojourn in Spa, where Karl Flesh used to teach violin summer classes. It seems that due to the religious differences between the two youths, the love-story was brusquely sedated by their parents.
In 1938 Josef’s father decided to move to Britain where the young prodigy would have started to perform and record. He made a magnificent first appearance in London in 1940 at the age of sixteen. At the Queen’s Hall on December 5th he performed as violin solo with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. He also started recording with EMI and the celebrated label “His Master’s Voice”. Yet, while performing in London he had another memory drop while playing the Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, unanimously considered one of the most technically complicated pieces of music ever written for violin.
In 1941 he experienced a deep depressive crisis and nervous breakdown and therefore was committed to St Andrew’s Hospital in Northampton where he underwent insulin coma therapy and electroconvulsive therapy, unfortunately with very scarce results. Sadly his unparalleled art and music quickly faded away: regrettably his celestial sound fell still and his violin became mute. In fact after a short dismaying period spent with his father out of the clinic he was eventually diagnosed with an acute case of schizophrenia and committed again, this time to Long Grove Hospital a mental asylum in Epsom, Surrey, which had a wing for Polish civilians. There he remained for many years until his death caused by a barbarous leukotomy in 1950. Between January 1947 and June 1952, 180 people died as a result of unsuccessful lobotomy in England and Wales. One of these victims was Josef Hassid, age 26, one the greatest violinist of all times.
His music was bright and his intonation spotless, his playing was effortless, without any shade of possible forcing; in each performance he showed exquisite style as he was masterly governing the bow and impeccably controlling his fingers. The final effect was indescribably brilliant, suave and the overall outcome moving and heartbreaking. A few hardly findable recorded performances are all that remains of his art as his great gift to music resides in only nine recordings.
Once listening to Josef Hassid, it is quite natural to believe what Fritz Kreisler said:
“A Heifetz violinist comes around every 100 years, a Hassid every 200.”
