All Music Guide : James Manheim
After decades during which the unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas of Bach stood alone, regarded by all but specialists as rather freakish musical occurrences, recent years have seen a growth of interest in the virtuoso violin repertory of the Baroque. Composers like Biber, Pisendel, and Tartini have all shown up with increasing frequency on concert programs and recordings. Here is more high-quality Baroque violin music that's plenty enjoyable for anyone to hear. The Italian violinist and composer Francesco Maria Veracini (1690-1768) worked in Italy, Germany, and England, competing with Handel and absorbing the music of both Corelli and Vivaldi. On the evidence of the music for violin and continuo presented on this disc, he was a paradoxical musical personality: a mercurial and exciting player and thinker who nevertheless had a preference for conservative forms. The four sonatas included here date from between 1716 and about 1760. They fall into the sonata da chiesa (slow-fast-slow-fast) and sonata da camera (a sequence of dance movements, often introduced by an overture) patterns of Corelli and his epoch, with little of the innovative large-scale architecture that Vivaldi developed. Into these decades-old molds, however, Veracini poured sparkling and innovative music. This is not extreme virtuoso violin writing like that of Bach or Biber, but instead music with vivid folk-like effects and passagework that's well enough wrought that a lyrical spirit often effervesces. The primary audience for this rather obscure music may be violinists in search of new and exciting recital material. They'll find it in abundance here, and lovers of the violin and the High Baroque should also sample this disc. Violinist John Holloway does a fine job matching the sound of his Baroque violin to the music at hand; only those with perfect pitch will even stop to notice that they're listening to a historically authentic instrument. ECM's sound design, with the Propstei St. Gerold (a provost's house in the Austrian countryside) as a setting, is superior.

Erik Satie - Avant-dernières pensées

Erik Satie (1866-1925)

Album Details:

Recording Year: 2008
Label: Harmonia Mundi
Catalog#: 902017
Spars Code: n/a
Performer: Alexandre Tharaud, Eric Le Sage, Juliette, Isabelle Faust, Jean Delescluse, David Guerrier

Number of Discs: 2
Recorded in: Stereo
Length: 2 Hours 6 Mins.

Notes & Review:

There's far too much music here to discuss the performances in detail--more than 30 works in all, many containing multiple pieces--so I'm going to have to ask that you take on faith the fact that there are no finer Satie performances in the catalog. Whether it's the characterful simplicity of Alexandre Tharaud's readings of the Gnossiennes (which frame the other pieces in the solo recital that comprises the first disc in this two-disc set), or his light, witty touch in Le Piccadilly, the Valse-ballet, Les pantins dansent, or the Petit Ouverture à danser, it's all just delightful. But it's the intelligence of this program, the thoughtfulness that went into making it, that gives you the best indication of how splendid the performances must be.

As just mentioned, the first disc consists of solo piano works, both the very familiar and some comparative rarities, programmed for maximum contrast and variety. The second disc contains duets for piano with, respectively, another pianist, cabaret singer (the wonderful Juliette), tenor, violin, and trumpet (La Statue retrouvée). Once again the programing allows for maximum variety, even in these often very brief pieces. As with the first disc, specific piano works (those for four hands in this case: Three Pieces in the Form of a Pear, La Belle Excentrique, and Cinéma) frame the other selections, creating a program rich in variety, ideal for continuous listening.

The fact that Satie's music, with its wacky titles and lack of pretension, often isn't "serious" doesn't mean that it shouldn't be taken seriously. As a composer his range may be limited, but he's not lacking in content, and most Satie recitals either collect all the most popular stuff, monotony be damned, or take a "library" approach and simply play everything in chronological or some other sequence that pays scant attention to why one piece should follow another, musically speaking. In assembling this program based entirely on musical values, thanks to Tharaud and his colleagues, Satie's stature as a unique musical voice emerges all the more impressively. Magnificently engineered, with an extensive booklet that's a model of its kind, there is simply no better or more entertaining way to get to know him.

--David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com

Note: Unlike the other works on this album, the performance of Erik Satie's "Le Piège de Méduse" (tracks 19 to 24) is on a prepared piano in which the strings have been altered to produce unusual tone colors and effects. In this piece, Satie's score specifies placing sheets of paper on the piano strings in order to imitate the "mechanical" sounds of a monkey puppet character in the play.

ENJOY!

Antonio Salieri : The 2 Piano Concertos, Variazioni sulla "Follia di Spagna", Les Horaces & Semiramide Overtures - Pietro Spada / Philharmonia Orchestra - 1996.

"This music is a discovery for anyone who always thought of Salieri as a compositional hack who became the bad guy!"

Antonio Salieri : 1750-1825
Philharmonia Orchestra
Pietro Spada : Piano & Conductor
Recorded in The Henry Wood Hall, London 20-21 August & 20 September 1994
Total Playing Time : 79min, 26sec
Year : 1996

"The 'Variations on the Follia of Spain' are in all probability Salieri's last symphonic work and can be chronologically placed in the middle of the Beethoven period (1815). They are almost surely the only nineteenth-century orchestral variations until Brahms's celebrated 'Variations on a theme by Haydn'. The folk song, incorrectly called 'Follies d'Espagne', which provides the theme is of seventeenth century Portuguese origin, and has been used and made famous by many composers including Corelli, d'Anglebert, Scarlatti, Pasquini, Bach (in his Cantatas), Cherubini (in the 'Osteria Portoghese'), Liszt (in his 'Spanish Rhapsody'), and Rachmaninov (in his 'Variations on a Theme by Corelli' op. 45).
It is hard for us to imagine why an elderly Salieri decided to compose a piece of this type - the work itself is conceived a bit in the spirit of a study in orchestration (as the later, famous Ravel's 'Bolero'). The instrumental draft faithfully follows the theme, always based on compositional and orchestral schemes which give the piece somewhat the air of an anthology of symphonic permutations relieved with solistic interludes. We can also discover canons and classic imitations as, for example, the dance movements in the pleasing variation in the 'Siciliana' style. This may not be a work of deep expression, but it shapes itself and finds the exact definition of its limits as an intellectual 'divertissement'.
Above all, and this is what makes it especially noteworthy, it manages to completely transcend that eighteenth-century climate which had dominated a great part of Salieri's previous works"

Notes & Review:
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Janáček’s birth, this Decca Collector Edition brings together most of the composer’s chamber works and solo pieces plus his most popular orchestral works and the magnificent Glagolitic Mass in a superb digital recording with Riccardo Chailly and Wiener Philharmoniker. The recordings of the solo works and chamber pieces feature one of the world’s most distinguished ensembles: the London Sinfonietta and David Atherton. Their recordings were originally released as a 5-LP set in 1981 and many of these performances have not been available for several years; many also make their first international appearance on CD. This set provides the listener with all the essential non-operatic Janáček in one convenient collection.
